Graphium Sarpedon in a few words

Graphium sarpedon is a very common butterfly in Asia. It is found mainly in lowland rainforests, but also in cities in flower gardens. It is regularly observed in the treetops, looking for food but also for mating partners among the trees’ flowers.

Graphium Sarpedon larvae rest on the tops of leaves and can be difficult to observe: you are more likely to smell them before you see them! This is because the caterpillars have an ""osmeter"", which looks like a fleshy horn that emerges from a slit behind the head and emits a characteristic odour.

The triangular shape of Graphium Sarpedon's upper wing and the thinner, translucent turquoise 'windows' evoke the image of a windsurfing board. They allow it to fly particularly fast and more directly than other lepidopterans. They are also more robust, allowing it to fly and feed at heights more exposed to the wind.

Where does Graphium Sarpedon live?

Graphium Sarpedon is endemic to a vast region running from India to Australia via Japan.
